Water Conservation for the 2014 California Drought

Southern California Water DroughtCalifornia is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts that has put us in a statewide drought emergency. Governor Brown has asked California residents to reduce their water use by at least 20%. While water conservation is of the norm for California residents, this year shows significant dilemmas, requiring all to put some extra effort into the state of our beloved hometown. Try to conserve water with these 7 ways:

  1. Start NOW – There is no better time than now to start taking care of our water source.
  2. A leaky faucet or showerhead can be wasting more than 20 gallons of water each day. Make sure you do not have any leaks by checking your water meter. If you are unsure if you have a leak, there are a variety of ways to check. You can have a water audit performed on your house if necessary.
  3. Trade all of your appliances for eco-friendly models. Energy efficient appliances are available and can save a significant amount of water and energy.
  4. Cut your shower time in half and you will be making a significant difference. Each minute you remove from your shower time will save 2.5 gallons of water. Those who shower every day can save more than 750 gallons of water a month by reducing their shower time by only one minute.
  5. This goes especially for those who live alone – if it’s yellow, let it mellow. Each time you flush the toilet, you waste anywhere from 3.5 and 7 gallons of water.
  6. When using your dishwasher and clothes washer, be sure to only run it when you have a full load.
  7. Most importantly, be aware of the precautions that surround wasteful water use.
