Going Green: Earth Day 2014

On April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day and remember why it’s important to stay green and protect the planet.  Here are a few Earth Day facts to get you thinking.

The Earth Day tradition was begun by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970.  It has been celebrated every year since.  On April 22nd of that year, more than 20 million people participated in Earth Day activities.

Recycling and the remanufacturing process creates 3.1 million jobs in the United States alone, and recycling saves between three and five times the energy generated by waste incinerator plants.

The United States uses over 80 billion aluminum soda cans in a single year.  Recycling these cans requires ninety percent less energy than creating new ones.

Over two million people in the world die prematurely every single year from causes related to air pollution.

To produce the Sunday paper every week requires raw materials equivalent to half a million trees.

This year, think about ways you can help; every little bit adds up!
