Wisely Avoiding Water Waste

Conserving Water during the California DroughtYou Can Help California Save Water

California is heading for its first implementation of statewide limitations on water usage. While some cities have worried that the cutbacks called for by Governor Brown are too tough, the California state government stands firm in their mandate to cut urban use of water by 25 percent. In light of the changes that are coming our way—and in light of the deep drought we are facing—we want to offer a few tips for conserving water.

  • Use the dishwasher if you have one. Doing so can save over ten gallons of water each time you have a full load of dishes. If you do have a dishwasher, wait until it is full to run it. If you do not, plug your sink and fill it with dishwashing water rather than letting it run when hand washing dishes.
  • Wash your dark clothes in a cold cycle. This will help save water, and will also preserve the color of your clothing.
  • Ask your plumber if you can re-route your grey water to your landscaping instead of directly to the sewer.
  • Take shorter showers. Cutting just a couple of minutes off of your shower time can save up to 150 gallons a month!
  • Test your toilet for a leak by putting a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fix it, and start saving water.
  • When shaving, plug the sink and fill it with a little water. Use that to rinse your razor instead of running water and save hundreds of gallons of water each month.

We hope you find other meaningful ways to conserve water during the drought!
